    About Atom Labs

Atom Labs is an independent software venture studio. We build focused, AI-native tools that solve a specific kind of problem: situations where people are spending real money, tracking incomplete data, and making decisions based on gut feel instead of evidence.

    The Pattern

We keep seeing the same pattern across different industries. Someone is investing significant resources into a process, changing multiple variables at once, and has no reliable way to attribute outcomes to specific actions. They can't tell what's working, so they keep paying for everything and hope for the best. Our products exist to replace that cycle with clarity.

    How We Build

Every product starts with the AI pipeline, not the interface. We design the intelligence layer first, grounding specialized agents in domain-specific knowledge so they can reason about the data, not just display it. The interface comes after the brain works. This means our tools don't just organize information. They interpret it, surface what matters, and tell you what to do next.

    How We Operate

Atom Labs is a small, product-focused organization. Each venture is developed independently while sharing engineering infrastructure, AI systems, and experimentation across the portfolio. We prioritize speed, clarity, and practical outcomes over scale for its own sake.

    Current Verticals

    Founder

Atom Labs was founded by Jim Harrer, a product builder with nearly four decades of experience shipping software across the modem, web, cloud, and AI eras. He started Mustang Software in 1986 with $5,000 and grew it into a NASDAQ-listed public company behind Wildcat! BBS, which powered more than 53,000 online communities worldwide before the browser reshaped the market.

Since then, Jim has served as turnaround CEO of two public companies, co-founded a fitness business with his wife Debbie, and mentored early-stage founders through the FoundersPad accelerator. He led application development at TrueBlue, and at Microsoft helped bring Azure Integration Services — including Logic Apps — from hackathon project to a Gartner iPaaS Leader.

Most recently, Jim spent nearly four years as Senior Product Marketing Manager for Visual Studio and Visual Studio Subscriptions, where he was the sole PMM for the IDE and Microsoft's public face at VS Live! events. He closed that chapter in July 2026 to build again on his own terms.

Atom Labs is the next canvas: a studio built around the belief that AI agents create the same kind of opening as the early software eras — room for people willing to learn, adapt, and build. The thread hasn't changed. Find the real pain. Build the thing that solves it. Tell a story people actually care about.
